Breath is the simplest yet most powerful tool we all have. It connects the body and mind and acts as a bridge between the physical and emotional part of us.
Life can feel overwhelming, and emotions often ride high in difficult moments. In these times, our breath changes – it becomes shallow, tight, or even held. This is the body’s natural response to stress, but it can also trap emotions within us. Though we all know how powerful the breath can be, we often overlook it, searching for something external to calm us. Yet, the most powerful tool we need is always within us: our breath.
When used consciously, the breath has the power to calm the nervous system, release tension, and help us process what we feel.
In yoga, breathwork – known as pranayama- is the foundation of practice. The breath grounds us, brings emotional balance, and invites us to be fully present. When we breathe deeply and mindfully, the parasympathetic nervous system activates, promoting relaxation, lowering heart rate, and creates sense of safety. Over time, we learn to trust our breath and allow it to guide us, rather than trying to control it. Its magic lies in staying with it and letting it flow naturally.
In Family Constellations, the breath is pivotal. When emotions rise during a session, it’s the breath that anchors us, bringing us back into the moment and helping us stay steady amidst the intensity. It creates a space of calm, allowing us to stay connected to the unfolding process. When change is about to happen, there’s always a moment when the client takes a deep breath – and clarity arrives. It’s as if a curtain is lift, and the pieces of the puzzle fall into place. In that moment, the body registers a heartfelt shift, signalling the beginning of meaningful change.
A simple breathing exercise to ty is to inhale for four counts, and exhale for eight, and repeat. This creates space for emotions to settle and restores balance to both body and mind.
In both Family Constellations and Yoga, the breath reminds us that we already have everything we need within us and through the simple act of breathing we can find the space to let go of the old and step into a sense of balance and ease.
